Bears-Commanders Week 5 Recap

The Bears edge Commanders in Thrilling 25–24 Monday Night Finish!

The Bears are starting to look like a team that believes in itself — and Monday night in Washington was the latest proof. Down by two with under three minutes left, rookie quarterback Caleb Williams guided a poised, methodical drive that set up Jake Moody for a 38-yard, game-winning field goal as time expired, giving Chicago a heart-stopping 25–24 win over the Commanders.

The Bears came out swinging. The offense clicked early behind D’Andre Swift, who looked like the most explosive player on the field. Swift racked up over 100 total yards in the first half, including a 55-yard touchdown reception that silenced the home crowd and put Chicago up 13–0.

But Chicago couldn’t fully capitalize. A blocked field goal and a penalty that wiped out a would-be touchdown kept Washington within striking distance, and the Commanders took advantage.

Second Half Momentum Shift

Jayden Daniels settled in after a shaky start, using his legs and quick reads to lead three straight scoring drives.

For a moment, it looked like Washington had seized all the momentum and would have the game in the bag until a costly mistake flipped the entire game.

The Turning Point in the Game

Facing third-and-one with 3:10 remaining, Daniels and Jacory Croskey-Merritt botched a handoff exchange. The ball hit the turf, and the Bears pounced. It was the Commanders’ third turnover of the night, and it proved fatal.

After that, Caleb Williams didn’t miss. Mixing quick throws with inside runs by Swift, the 2nd year QB calmly maneuvered Chicago into field goal range. Then Moody, who activated from the practice squad earlier in the week, delivered in the clutch as he drillied the game-winner from 38 yards as time expired.

Standout Performers

D’Andre Swift: 14 carries, 108 yards; 2 receptions, 67 yards, 1 TD. Explosive all night.

Caleb Williams: Poised and precise, finishing with over 250 total yards and zero turnovers.

Jake Moody: Four made field goals, including the 38-yard game winner.

Bears Defense: Three takeaways, consistent pressure, and timely stops when it mattered most.

Final Take

This wasn’t a perfect performance by the Bears, far from it, but it was the kind of win that defines culture. They showed toughness, discipline, and composure under pressure.

For the first time in years, Chicago looks like a team capable of winning the tight ones, and more importantly, one that’s starting to believe it can.
